Skip the sugary store-bought BBQ sauce and make this easy and healthy BBQ sauce recipe at home! It has the same bold, sweet and spicy flavor that you love from regular BBQ sauce, just made healthier.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp olive oil

1/2 medium white onion, diced

4 cloves garlic minced

2 tbsp tomato paste

1 (14.5 oz.) can crushed  tomatoes

1/3 cup apple cider vinegar

1/4 cup chopped dates, pitted packed

1/2–3/4 cup water, or as needed to reach your desired consistency (we used 3/4 cup)

2 tbsp vegan Worcestershire

tsp mild chili powder

tsp smoked paprika

1 tbsp dijon mustard

Salt and pepper, to taste

BBQ Sauce Directions:

  1. Heat a large pan on medium. Add oil and sauté garlic and onion for about 3-5 minutes Add in tomato paste, paprika, and cloves. Cook, stirring constantly, for 3 more minutes.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients, except the salt and pepper, and turn up the heat to medium high until they come to a boil.
  3. Reduce the heat to low, and simmer, covered, for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove the sauce from the heat and let it cool for 15 minutes. Blend the sauce with an immersion blender or regular blender until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste.

You can store this sauce in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 7 days, and freeze it in a freezer-safe container for up to three months. Thaw it in the fridge.
